BTTB Internet Slow Down for Fiber Cable Cut in Alexandria of Egypt

BTTB Internet Slow Down due to Fiber Cable Cut in Alexandria of Egypt

The 'SEA-ME-WE4', Only one submarine cable connect Bangladesh to Internet world via different gateway of Europe and Singapore in Asia. Full Internet data traffic depends on this cable path, including International Telephone Call.

After last incident of Fiber cut around November 2007 in internal backbone, connecting Dhaka to landing point of this fiber cable, it was again having problem due to other incident in Alexandria of Egypt Wednesday.

As per Bdnews24.com, The SEA-ME-WE4 submarine cable has been cut in Alexandria of Egypt Wednesday, suspending the BTTB's Internet connectivity with the Europe and USA, BTTB official said. The BTTB official could not confirm how long it will take to restore the link.

BTTB gave an statement telling the mishap in Alexandria took place at 10:15am of Bangladesh time. But the cause of the mishap remains unknown to the authorities.

This incident of Alexandria of Egypt, caused 4 units of STM4, (About 620Mb/s of data capacity) unusable. BTTB has different gateway (peering agreement) with different provider, SingTel in Singapore is one of them. BTTB is now diverting Internet data Traffic via this provider. As per peering agreement with SingTel, capacity of this peer is about 310Mb/s. At this moment, BTTB routing all traffic through this path.
Though the data traffic is high and only this path is available, there is hough Congestions on links.

There were several proposal to join in redundant submarine link was been refused before, mishaps such as Alexandria can be happen in future. This is high time to think again for the redundant submarine link before any chance gone ...

More updates will be posted here....

Update on:

  • Jan 30 20:27:04 BDT 2008: Egypt's Ministry of Telecommunications has formed an emergency team to bring back the service quickly through several alternative paths such as the Suez Canal and satellite links,'' according to a statement broadcast on Egyptian television.

  • Jan 30 22:30:04 BDT 2008: Seems BTTB has upgrade their 'capacity of peering agreement' with SingTel. For last few minute Internet in different part of Bangladesh is getting better service. No one from BTTB is available to confirm this upgrade.

  • Jan 31 10:05:04 BDT 2008: No Good News yet. BTTB has increased a little capacity with SingTel peering, user is now getting a little batter service then before.

  • Jan 31 11:37:00 BDT 2008: The Egyptian telecoms ministry said it did not know how the cables were cut or if weather was a factor. Storms had forced Egypt to close the northern mouth of the Suez canal on Tuesday. Egypt authority is still can't confirm the estimated time of restore the service. Mean time they are trying to bypass bandwidth via another link which normally use control or maintain Shiping route of 'Suez canal' and links from available satellite bandwidth.

  • Feb 02 13:11:33 BDT 2008:As per Arabnews.com, there is no definite time specified for the repair but early indications are that at least 10 days and perhaps two weeks will be needed to bring both cables back to full service. The Fiber-Optic Link Around the Globe (FLAG), is a 28,000 km long submarine communications cable owned by India’s Reliance Communications Ltd. Click here for details from Arabnews.com...

    Why FM 200 Used for Data Center Fire Control Management

    FM-200® Systems: Protect Electronics and Information Technology Systems

    Managers of electronic assets, either data centers or network equipment room are focused on elimination of downtime. For many industries, the "no downtime" operating parameter is not just an objective, it's a matter of life or death.

    Fire is one of the most common disasters to data centers assets, but it is preventable. The heat output and power requirements of the new generation of processors and servers pack more heat into less space. With more power and increased heat, you also have more fire potential.

    I personally Recommend FM-200 Systems to Prevent Fire Disasters in Data Center or Network Equipment Room. This FM-200 Fire Protection is a 'Water Less' System, which can prevent fire to expend. With incipient fire detectors and intelligent alarm panels, a system can detect overheating electrical wire before it reaches flash point and trigger FM-200 System to act.

    Unlike water, FM-200 systems are non-conductive and non-corrosive making them safe to use around electrical equipment. FM-200 gas penetrates with three-dimensional capability, easily reaching into obscure or hard to reach areas. There is no residue, particulate, or collateral damage after discharge. FM-200 is also safe for people working in the area.

    This FM-200 Fire Protection System can be used in may application, like:

    * File server farms
    * Data centers
    * Cable spreading rooms
    * Air traffic control centers
    * Telecommunications equipment
    * Electric utilities
    * Generators and turbine enclosures
    * Robotic media storage units
    * Switchgears
    * Transformer vaults
    * UPS facilities
    * Any assets that shouldn't get wet
    * Existing halon system replacement

    FM-200 is protecting all types of organizations listed below:

    * Airports and satellite installations protected by FM-200.
    * Casino properties protected by FM-200.
    * The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency installed FM-200 systems because it was safe for people and the best environmental choice.
    * FM-200 gas spheres protect millions of dollars of equipment at each cable communications facility owned by Cox Communications.
    * Carter & Burgess, a large architectural and engineering firm, explains why they use FM-200 systems in telecommunications and data center facilities.
